Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island is 19km-and 35mins by fast ferry-from Auckland city. Though similar in size to Singapore, it has barely 8,000 inhabitants, the rolling hills and tranquil coves protected from urban invasion by strict planning controls. Vineyards and olive groves, cafes and art galleries are the most visible signs of activity. The ocean is a constant backdrop and the pace of life is slow. Getting there is easy. Leaving is hard.
